Your home's heating and cooling system is an expensive necessity for any homeowner. The monthly service bills from using your unit can be high and it can cost thousands of dollars for a full system replacement. However, a well maintained unit could last many years. The key to an efficient heating and air conditioner system is the regular replacement of the air filter.
The filter in your HVAC should be changed once a month in a typical home. You may need to change it more often if there is a lot of dust present or have pets that shed. You can also check the filter every few weeks until you get a sense of how quickly it gets dirty and needs to be replaced.
In many air conditioning units, the filter can usually be found at the bottom of the air handler or over the air intake grill (Return Grill). Simply open the grill and replace the old filter with the new one. Air filters come in many sizes to accommodate the wide array of furnaces, so be sure to have bought the correct size filter for your system.
